Okinawa Surf Lessons

We provide premium surfboards selected for your size and skill level, along with wetsuits or rashguards, and reef booties. Reef booties are essential for Okinawa's coral reef environment and are included at no extra cost.

Please bring swimwear to wear under your wetsuit/rashguard, a beach towel, eco-friendly sunscreen, and drinking water.

Our lessons feature approximately 2 full hours of active in-water coaching. If wave conditions are great and your stamina allows, we are happy to stay in longer! We conduct a brief orientation upon arrival at the surf house, and the bulk of your learning takes place in the ocean with your coach.

Yes. Transportation from and back to Happy Surfing Okinawa is included. If the local reef in Yomitan is working, we surf right in front of our house. Otherwise, we drive you to the best waves on the island based on daily wind and tides (ranging from 40 minutes up to 2 hours for northern trips).

Most surf lessons are ¥15,000. On days when the best waves are found in northern Okinawa, the lesson price may be ¥20,000 due to the additional travel required. These trips can involve up to two hours of driving each way, providing access to some of Okinawa's most pristine coastlines and cleanest surf conditions.

Absolutely. Our entire program is built around beginners, early learners, families, and relaxing longboard surfing. Our instructors have decades of experience navigating Okinawa's reefs and timing sessions with safe high tides. If children are joining, please let us know their ages and swimming comfort level in advance when booking so we can prepare kid-sized equipment and dedicated safety supervision.

Lessons are conducted in English, and every one of our surf coaches is also very skilled and fluent in Japanese (日本語でのレッスンも大歓迎です). Japanese guests, international travelers, and bilingual families are completely welcome, ensuring easy communication and confidence in the water.
